Hotel Review: Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa, Gran Canaria, Spain
Overall Rating: 4.2 / 5
Having just returned from a week-long stay at the Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa, I’m delighted to share a comprehensive review of this popular resort in the picturesque fishing village of Puerto de Mogán. It’s a hotel that offers a compelling mix of relaxation and activity, set within one of the most beautiful areas of Gran Canaria.
First Impressions & Location:
The hotel’s location is undoubtedly one of its strongest assets. Nestled directly against a golden-sand beach and the sparkling Atlantic, the views are breathtaking. It’s also just a short, pleasant five-minute stroll across a bridge to the charming centre of Puerto de Mogán, known as “Little Venice” for its network of canals and bridges. Here, you’ll find a vibrant marina, excellent restaurants, boutique shops, and a fantastic weekly market. The balance between secluded resort and accessible local culture is perfect.
The Grounds & Pools:
The hotel is designed as a sprawling, lush tropical garden. Towering palm trees, vibrant bougainvillaea, and tranquil koi ponds create a truly paradise-like atmosphere. It’s easy to forget you’re in a large hotel while wandering the beautifully maintained paths.
The pool area is extensive. There are multiple swimming pools, including a large main pool, a quieter adults-only pool, and shallow children’s pools. While sunbeds are plentiful, claiming one with a prime location still requires the classic morning towel reservation. The poolside snack bar was a convenient spot for lunch and drinks.
The Room:
We stayed in a Double Room with Garden View. The room was spacious, clean, and functionally furnished with a comfortable king-size bed, a sitting area, a desk, and a decently sized balcony. The bathroom, while a little dated in its décor, was spotless and featured a full tub with a shower. The air conditioning was efficient and quiet, which was essential for a good night’s sleep. The Wi-Fi was reliable and free throughout the room and hotel grounds. While the style might be described as “classic Canarian” rather than ultra-modern, it was comfortable and provided everything we needed for a restful stay.
Food & Drink:
We were on a half-board basis. The main buffet restaurant offered a staggering variety of options for every meal. Breakfast was particularly impressive, with everything from fresh fruits and pastries to cooked-to-order omelettes and a vast selection of cold cuts and cheeses. Dinners featured different themed nights (Italian, Mexican, Canarian), ensuring there was always something new to try. The quality was consistently good for a buffet of this scale, though some hot dishes could occasionally be lukewarm. The real culinary highlight was the à la carte Italian restaurant, which we highly recommend booking (it’s included for half-board guests but requires reservation).
Service:
Service throughout the hotel was generally friendly and efficient. The reception staff were helpful at check-in and when we had questions. The cleaning staff did an impeccable job daily, and the waitstaff in the restaurants worked tirelessly to clear tables and keep things moving.
Points to Consider:
- Scale: The hotel is large and can feel busy, especially during peak season around the pool and buffet areas.
- Décor: While clean and comfortable, some areas of the hotel are showing their age and could benefit from modernization.
- Evening Entertainment: The entertainment was typical for a resort hotel— enjoyable for what it was but not a major highlight.
Final Verdict:
The Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa is a fantastic choice for couples and families seeking a classic sun-and-sea holiday in a top-tier location. Its stunning gardens, excellent pools, and direct beach access provide the perfect setting for relaxation. While it may not be the most modern or luxurious hotel on the island, it offers exceptional value, wonderful amenities, and a genuine slice of Canarian charm. I would not hesitate to return.
